ICT Assignment Part 3

For this part of the assignment we were asked to write a report explaining the factors we would need to consider when buying a computer for this course.

In my opinion computers are an integral component for this course. Technology is a huge part of this course not only for ICT and Multimedia Design but we need it for all our other modules too.

Having purchased a new laptop in September this year for this course I considered these factors:

1. Price- Everyone knows that most students are strapped for cash so an affordable price is essential but at the same time you want value for your money so it is important to find a computer that has all the features you need for a reasonable price.

2. Portability- a laptop is ideal for students as they can easily transport it from home to college and vice versa, while still having the power and storage of a regular P.C.

3. Memory- good memory storage is really a really important factor to consider when buying a computer. You have to decide what you need your computer to store, whether it be tons of music, pictures and videos, which would require a lot of memory space, or if you just need your computer for college work.

4. Processor- the better the processor the faster your computer will perform so this would be a vital point I would consider when buying a laptop, there is nothing more frustrating than a slow computer.

5. Operating System- everyone has their own personal preferences when it comes to the operating system, some people prefer Windows XP others prefer Vista. I personally prefer XP as I find it easier to operate than Vista.

6. Software- Not all computers contain the software you need in the price given, you may need to purchase the software separately, which can be very expensive. So you should make sure that your computer contains software you would need such as Microsoft word, PowerPoint etc. that are essential for this course.

7. Security Software- Many things we download off the internet have harmful viruses that can completely infect your computer and destroy important files, so it is important to have protection against such viruses. A good security package like Norton Antivirus or Bulldog Antivirus software is quite expensive but in the long run it’s worth it.

8. External Optical Drive- some computer systems do not contain a CD or DVD drive which I think is important to have. You should make sure you have one on your computer that you intend to buy or you will have to buy an external drive which would cost more money.

9. Battery Life- I would want a long battery life for my computer so if I was on the go and didn’t have my charger with me my battery wouldn’t die quickly. Also charging your laptop constantly is a waste of electricity, if you use your laptop all the time and are charging it all the time your electricity bills will be higher.

10. Wireless Connectivity- as a student I am always using the internet for researching for assignments. Wireless internet would be better for me as I am always on the go and hate wires hanging everywhere.

11. Speakers- as part of this course YouTube is used a lot for psychology related videos, so speakers are essential, some laptops don’t include speakers so you would have to buy them separately. I would make sure they were built into the laptop rather than buy them separately and have to plug them in all the time which would be a hassle.

A good website to see various factors to consider is www.dell.ie. This site lets you virtually build your own computer.

ICT assignment Part 2

http://www.brainage.com/launch/articles.jsp

As part of my ICT assignment I was asked write a summary of an article relating to some area of technology that interests me. I decided to research the Nintendo DS and the Brain Age games, I thought this topic was good as it included an element of psychology by looking at the brain and also the technology element. I found a number of articles, which were really interesting.

The article described how successful the Brain Age games were for all ages by presenting a number of simple challenges for the player that are under a time limit. These challenges include Sudoku puzzles, written activities, spoken activities, memory games and math problems. At the end of each activity you get a score starting from twenty, which is a perfect brain age. Your score is determined by the speed of your response to the activity. If your response is slow or if you get too many wrong answers your brain age increases so you could be eighteen with a brain score of seventy six, which is a bit worrying! However by playing the game every day and training your brain you have a chance to lower your brain age to a perfect twenty.

According to Dr. Kawashima, a neuroscientist and also the maker of this game, who has conducted tests on brain activity for over twenty years, certain types of activities stimulate brain activity. As we all know our brain ages as we do and brain activity decreases. Therefore, all the activities compiled on this game are aimed to stimulate activity in the brain and keep your brain “on its toes”, so to speak.

False Advertising in the Beauty World.

Ok so i'm going to seem like a big moan on my blog because i keep ranting about stuff but i can't think of anything else that i can write loads about other than what really pisses me off! I decided to write about advertising in the cosmetics industry because it affects most women who use make up, hair products etc...Everyone sees the ads, with the celebrities and models claiming that you will look as good as them if you use these products. So, like mindless drones we purchase these products believing that they will make us look amazing like the models in the ads. For example in the ads for mascara model Kate Moss and actress Eva Longoria boast how Rimmel and L'oreal mascara will make your eyelashes fabulously long and thick. Hmm I don't think so. Direct your eye towards the bottom left hand corner of the screen..."Enhanced in post production" or "Filmed with lash inserts" in the tiniest writing ever. Nice. Nobody ever looks there so they go out and buy the mascara at €10 a pop only to find that they don't get the Kate or Eva effect. I hate false advertising and have fallen victim to it many times before wasting hard earned money on shite that doesn't work.

Nightclub Bouncers....GRRRRRR

Nightclub bouncers...I think everyone has had at least one run in with some rude, stocky bloke who likes to play god standing outside clubs deciding who gets in and who doesn't purely based on looks. On a recent night out to town for my friend's 19th birthday we decided to try somewhere new, the aptly named Noobar just off Grafton Street. As me and my friend approached the door we were faced with two huge bouncers who barely glanced at our ids and asked us who we were with. We gestured towards both our boyfriends who were standing behind us. The big Italien looking bouncer took one look at my boyfriend and said "your not getting in, we've had trouble with you before." My boyfriend has been to 3 places in town, 21's, Bondi and Wax and has never been in a fight in his life. He is really quiet, by no means stocky or particularly tall, i think he is about 5"10 and about 9 stone, so clearly not the most threatening person in the world. But this arsehole takes a look at him and refuses him based on looks?

He was so rude to us when we asked him why so we left before he started on the lads, which bouncers are famous for doing even when unprovoked. Likewise, they are famous for letting underage girls with barely any clothes on in just because their boobs are hanging out or because they have skirts as short as belts on. I'm not saying i didn't try get into clubs when i was underage but i didn't dress like a slag to get in there. So why do bouncers feel that they have the right to refuse entry to people purely based on how they look? I really don't know the answer but clearly they are not happy in their own sad little lives that they feel the need to use their "power" to ruin other people's nights.

tick tock keisha

x-factor!

ok so like most people i am absolutely hooked on the x-factor, but im kind of undecided on the whole Jedward situation. On the one hand they can't sing to save their lives and their over use of the words "like" and "oh my god" drives me mad, but on the other hand they are really entertaining. I hated them at the start, they came across as obnoxious little shites with extremely bad put on american accents, but i've came to respect their handling of public hatred over the last few weeks. The bad press doesn't seem to get them down and the relentless booing every week doesn't phase them. I thought they done a really good job this week singing under pressure and i loved the Vanilla Ice rapping! I really think they can get through to the final although i really hope olly, stacy or joe don't get kicked out!
